A Brief History of Mary Wilson Minimize

Before Mary Wilson became a Pilates Trainer, she was an award winning singer, dancer, and actress and Vice President of a successful National Sales Firm. In 1994, a car in which she was traveling as a passenger crashed and her life changed forever.

She suffered a traumatic brain injury and a fractured femur and pelvis. She was comatose for nine days while a breathing tube pumped oxygen through her nose, past her sinuses and vocal chords into her trachea. Upon regaining consciousness, she was hospitalized for another two months while her condition stabilized and she began to heal.

Slurred speech, double vision, a wheelchair, and many other new found difficulties accompanied her home from the hospital. Unable to walk a straight line, or climb stairs, or speak clearly, her doctor advised her to accept that she would never fully recover. She did not accept that opinion.

Several years of three times a week physical therapy and daily exercise came to an end when her therapists declared they had done all they could do. Not good enough. Mary sought out and engaged several Feldenkrais practitioners through extended programs in an effort to regain a natural gait and eliminate the lack of coordination on the right side of her body.

She continued to improve, but could not reach her goals until she discovered Pilates. Pilates strengthened her core, lengthened her spine, making it stretched and flexible. It helped her become balanced and brought control to her movement. The Body/Mind Connection of Pilates renewed the pioprioception of her movement.

Through the regular practice of Pilates, she began to self-correct. It was hard to believe that 4 years prior she was told she would probably never ride a bicycle again. Now she was doing so much more and enjoying her life as a mother. When she became pregnant, her doctor recommended physical therapy to maintain her center of balance.

She practices Pilates throughout her pregnancy until a week before she delivered. Three months after her baby was born, she began training to earn her certification as a Pilates Instructor. Since becoming certified in 1999, she has built a practice of satisfied clients. By focusing on each individual’s specific condition and needs, she is able to create a program that gets results. Pilates changed her life and now she uses it to bring good things to nice people.
